ARE YOU READY TO RETURN TO WORK?
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) evaluates an individual’s ability to move or perform their daily tasks. Functional Capacity Evaluations are used for a variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons is to evaluate an injured person’s ability to return to work. FCE’s designed to evaluate your ability to return to work specifically assess the following areas:
- The individual’s functional abilities and job demands.
- The individual’s current extent of disability.
- When the individual can safely return to work.
- Whether or not the individual can return to the job duties held prior to the injury.
- Helping in designing a rehabilitation plan.
Get Ready For Your FCE Test…
Before the Test
Wear loose-fitted clothing that would allow you to freely move. Bring a copy of your medical records all the way from the start of your injury. If you were given a referral or prescription, bring that to. Bring your current job description or expected job description, otherwise, you may have to provide this information before the start of the test.
During the Test
Your Physical Therapist will explain to you the details of the testing procedure and all that it entails. We may assess one or more of the following: Your ability to move your joints through space, your strength, your ability to perform standardized lifting tests, your pain tolerance, etc. You should be comfortable during the test. Make sure that you ask any questions that you may have.
After the Test
The Physical Therapist will Evaluate the data compiled during your visit, review your medical records, and create a report that addresses the reason as to why you were referred to us.

What does an FCE have to do with Worker’s Compensation?
FCE’s can be a part of worker’s compensation claims. FCE’s provide the objective data needed about the injury; its extent and severity.
The FCE can determine:
- If an individual can return to work
- What tasks they can and cannot do at work
- If job tasks can be modified in order to meet the demands of their work
- If they need additional treatment or a referral to a work hardening program.
The FCE can also be used to help a medical team develop treatment programs, to measure changes in patients before and after a rehabilitation program, and/or to modify current rehabilitation treatment.
What is a work hardening program?
According to the American Physical Therapy Association, a work hardening program is “a highly structured, goal-oriented, individualized intervention program designed to return the patient/client to work. Work Hardening programs, which are multidisciplinary in nature, use real or simulated work activities designed to restore physical, behavioral, and vocational functions. Work Hardening addresses the issues of productivity, safety, physical tolerances, and worker behaviors.
We currently do not offer a work hardening program, but we hope to in the near future. Check back soon!
Reasons why your doctor may refer you for a FCE
Your doctor or insurance may want you to get a Functional Capacity Evaluation in order to clarify any of the following
- To determine the level of safe maximal function at the time of maximum medical improvement.
- To provide a pre-vocational baseline of functional capabilities to assist in the vocational rehabilitation process.
- To objectively set restrictions and guidelines for return to work.
- To determine whether specific job tasks can be safely performed by modification of technique, equipment, or by further training.
- To determine whether additional treatment or referral to a work hardening program is indicated.
- To assess outcome at the conclusion of a work hardening program.
*Note: We are only currently offering pre-employment FCE’s and FCE’s to determine if additional treatment or referral to a work hardening program is indicated.
As you can see there are many reasons why a Doctor, insurer or employer may want you to receive an FCE. The contents of your Functional Capacity Evaluation will be tailored based on the reason as to why you were referred. Some of the above reasons for referral will require us to take more time to perform the FCE. Some Functional Capacity Evaluations can take 30 minutes, others can take upwards of 6 hours. We use the latest in sophisticated computerized software and hardware to perform the FCE as quickly and accurately as possible.
Typically if your doctor is requesting for you to get a FCE, you need to either be preparing to return to previous job or have been offered a new job, or you're currently working with a rehabilitation provider (like a Physical Therapist) and a vocational objective is established.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is an assessment used to determine an individual’s physical abilities, limitations, and functional status. It helps employers, insurers, and healthcare professionals understand an individual’s capabilities in the workplace.
Anyone recovering from an injury or illness, seeking to return to work, or needing to assess their physical abilities in a work setting can benefit from an FCE. It’s often utilized in workers’ compensation cases, rehabilitation programs, and disability evaluations. Doctors often refer for FCE’s to help clarify specific indications.
The evaluation can typically include a series of standardized tests and activities that may assess strength, endurance, flexibility, balance, and mobility. Depending on the indication for referral, the test may simulate various work-related tasks to gauge an individual’s functional abilities accurately.
The duration of an FCE can vary based on individual circumstances. On average, it can range from 30 minutes to 4 hours, but the precise time can depend on factors like the complexity of the evaluation and the individual’s condition.
In general, you should expect to participate in a series of physical tests and tasks. These might include lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and other movements relevant to your job or potential job responsibilities. This can also vary based on the reason as to why you were referred.
Insurance coverage for an FCE can vary. Some insurance plans or workers’ compensation programs may cover part or all of the evaluation cost. It’s advisable to check with your insurance provider or employer to understand coverage specifics.
Yes, an FCE can help determine an individual’s suitability for specific job roles. By assessing physical capabilities, the evaluation provides valuable insights into whether someone can perform essential job tasks safely and effectively.
For employers, an FCE aids in understanding an employee’s abilities post-injury or illness. It assists in determining suitable work tasks, planning accommodations, and establishing return-to-work programs that align with an individual’s functional capabilities.
